About vehicle timing chains

The connection between the crankshaft and the mainshaft is often known as a timing chain, both a timing chain and often a timing belt is used is to operate the inlet and exhaust valve gear during the stroke cycle of the piston. The chain keeps these valves opening and closing at specific time periods, helping the engine to run smoothly and properly.

Until recently, the vast majority of cars were built to use a timing belt instead of a timing chain. Using a timing belt was usually more cost effective than using a timing chain, higher end sport cars were previously the more likely vehicle to use a timing chain instead of a timing belt.

The required required replacement of your timing chain is is normally determined by a few signs. Some timing chain replacement signs are more subtle than others. Poor fuel economy and occasional misfires could be caused by a timing chain issue, as could difficulty starting the car or the engine making a rattling sound regularly.

If you notice any unusual sounds from the engine or anything out of the ordinary then you should take the car to your mechanic. They’ll be able to diagnose the issue and if it’s a problem with the timing chain it’s best to have the replacement done fairly quickly.

While timing belt replacement can be expensive, the damage caused by a faulty chain will be much more expensive to fix so it’s best to tackle the problem early. By taking the financial hit early you can avoid major engine damage which can cost thousands of dollars to repair.

Replacing the timing chain is something which should be carried out by a qualified professional rather than a repair you attempt at home. It’s a complex and time-intensive repair, and getting it wrong could cause some pretty serious and expensive damage to your vehicle.

The best way of saving money on timing chain replacement is to have the work done early before it causes any further damage to your engine. The cost of the replacement can be high, but it’s a mere fraction of what you’d have to pay if it started causing problems with other parts of the engine.

  1. Replacing the timing chain is a big job which will likely require multiple parts of the engine being disassembles and rebuilt
  2. Rest assured that your local mechanic will ensure all engine parts are thoroughly cleaned with de-greaser.
  3. The firing order of the car will then be determined by the mechanic.
  4. They will ensure that the number 1 cylinder is up by removing the spark plug and placing a screwdriver in the spark plug hole, with the piston near the top of the screwdriver
  5. The mechanic will disconnect and remove all battery cables.
  6. The engine will be drained of all coolant
  7. Radiator hoses will be removed by the mechanic, he will also remove all drive belts, remove the heater hoses, together with removing the water pump and fan and finally the timing chain cover
  8. There will be a mark or a dot on both the old chain and the tooth of the chain gear. Your mechanic will rotate the engine until the marks are in alignment
  9. Your local MP mechanic will scratch a new reference mark across the gear and the chain with a screwdriver, before loosening the tension gear and removing the chain
  10. The gear will be lubricated prior to your local mobile mechanic installing the new timing chain.
  11. Your mechanic with then place the new timing chain onto the gears, ensuring the marks align properly
  12. The camshaft sprocket bolts are then reinstalled
  13. A hammer and punch will then be used to drive out the crankshaft seal
  14. The new crankshaft seal will be tapped into the timing cover and the seal will be covered with oil
  15. Your Local mobile mechanic will then start replacing the timing chain cover, reinstalling the fuel and water pumps and then the fan
  16. The radiator will be filled with coolant and the various belts and hoses will be reconnected
  17. The battery will be reconnected and the engine started
